Another chapter in Japan-South Korea rivalry

DOHA, Qatar (AP)—With Japan Cheap Nike Shox facing traditional rival South Korea in the Asian Cup semifinals on Tuesday, coach Alberto Zaccheroni is trying to keep his players’ motivation under control. The experienced Italian coach believes too much motivation might increase tension among Japan players, who are seeking to win a record fourth Asian Cup title and are already well aware of the stakes. Zaccheroni expects a tight match between very similar teams, and thinks it will be decided by small details. South Korea is also trying to play down the loaded history of the two sides that have five Asian titles and 12 semifinal appearances between them. The two countries are historical rivals mainly due to Tokyo’s brutal 35-year occupation of the Korean peninsula in the early part of the last century. Major international soccer and baseball matches between them have drawn huge attention in both countries, whose relations often suffer from territorial and historical disputes cheap ugg boots stemming from the colonial legacy. In recent years, however, a sports rivalry has emerged as the two countries have grown closer, especially in the cultural sphere. In 2002, South Korea and Japan co-hosted the World Cup. “I don’t want to focus too much on the background between Japan and South Korea,” South Korea midfielder Koo Ja-cheol said Monday, one day before the semifinal. “It’s always something special, but it’s just a game before the final and it won’t make a big difference to us,” said Koo, who leads the tournament’s scoring table with four goals. Japan midfielder Makoto Hasebe also didn’t want to dwell on the past. “I don’t need to speak about it a lot, you know the history and the relationship of the two teams. We’ll play with pride in tomorrow’s match,” Hasebe said. “I want to be the champion here and that’s more important than beating South Korea.” For Zaccheroni, Japan vs. South Korea is the Asian version of Brazil vs. Argentina or Italy vs. Germany, the classic South American and European showdowns. “I don’t know about South Korea, but for me yes, it’s like those rivalries,” the former Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan coach said. Zaccheroni said his players were “mentally exhausted” after they battled from behind with 10 men to defeat host Qatar in the quarterfinals and gave them a day off to rest on Sunday. “The physical side is important but the mental aspect is especially important when you’ve had a tight match so I needed to give them a day off,” Zaccheroni said. “I don’t winter boots 5760 need to motivate my players, they know how important tomorrow’s match is. I have to find the right balance between focus and tension, too much tension is not good. “I have to adjust and control the right level of tension. Too much motivation leads to too much tension.” Japan defender Maya Yoshida will be out after picking up a red card against Qatar but Zaccheroni said he was not worried about his young defense, which has conceded four goals in four games. “We lead the tournament with 11 goals scored,” the coach said of Japan’s high-powered attack. Zaccheroni’s team will rely on the scoring abilities of striker Shinji Okazaki, who has three goals so far, midfielder Shinji Kagawa, who exploded with two against Qatar, and the midfield inspiration of Keisuke Honda. Japan has won three of the past five Asian titles but has a losing record overall (34-10) against South Korea. At the Asian Cup, though, the teams have won a game each, with South Korea winning on penalties in the third-place playoff four years ago. South Korea, which progressed with a 1-0 extra-time win over Iran, will be eager to make up for a consistent record of failure in the knockout stages of this tournament. It has winter boots 5760 only once failed to make the quarterfinals in 12 appearances but has not won it since the last of its two titles in 1960. South Korea captain and Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung will be playing his 100th international. “I won’t put too much meaning to the fact that it’ll be my 100th match. It’s the semifinal and against Japan, and that will make the match very interesting,” said Park, who will vie for supremacy in the midfield against Honda. South Korea coach Cho Kwang-rae said the two teams were very similar. “Both teams focus on controlling the game in midfield and building up from there to go into attack in high tempo, It will an exciting match to watch,” Cho said. Zaccheroni expects the same. “It’s going to be a very close match, where details and little things will make the difference. We have to stay focused and fight the entire match, we have to work for 90 minutes without Air jordan 3.5 stopping. The team with the bigger desire will win,” Zaccheroni said.

Conner’s penalty shot helps Pens beat Wings 4-1

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Chris Conner(notes) scored Cheap Nike Shox on Pittsburgh’s first successful penalty shot in nearly four years, Jordan Staal(notes) added his third goal in three games and the Sidney Crosby(notes)-less Penguins beat the injury-thinned Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Tuesday night. Two of the NHL’s best teams met for only the third time since they faced each other in the Stanley Cup finals in 2008 and 2009—they split a pair of games last season—but a number of top names were missing. Crosby, the NHL’s leading scorer, sat out a sixth consecutive game with a concussion. The Red Wings were without goalies Jimmy Howard(notes) and Chris Osgood(notes), forwards Tomas Holmstrom(notes), Pavel Datsyuk(notes) and Danny Cleary(notes) and defenseman Brad Stuart(notes). The Red Wings took 18 of a possible 26 points in their first 13 games after Datsyuk started their run of injuries by breaking his right hand, but Detroit’s lack of depth showed up as Pittsburgh won its third in a row. The Penguins were 0-1-2 in their first three games without Crosby, who might not ugg outlet return until after the Jan. 30 All-Star game. Crosby said earlier in the day he is getting better, but still had headaches and is uncertain when he will return. He has not skated since being driven headfirst into the boards by the Lightning’s Victor Hedman(notes) on Jan. 5. Goalie Joey MacDonald(notes), playing in only his fifth game this season, made an early mistake that led to the Staal goal 3:02 into the game. MacDonald took too long to play the puck behind the net, allowing Tyler Kennedy(notes) to steal a short pass intended for Jonathan Ericsson(notes) and feed it to an undefended Staal at the side of the net. Staal, who missed the first half of the season with an infected foot and broken hand, has New GHD three goals and six points in three games. Conner, awarded a penalty shot after being hooked by Kris Draper(notes) as he broke in on MacDonald, went from his forehand to his backhand before tucking a shot between the goalie’s pads. The Penguins had been 0 for 12 on penalty shots since Jarkko Ruutu(notes) scored on Jan. 20, 2007 against Toronto with nearly the same move. Given a 2-0 lead, Penguins All-Star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) made the lead stand up by making 36 saves. Fleury, 21-11-2 despite winning only once in his first seven starts, has 80 saves in his last two starts. He stopped 44 shots in a 3-2 victory over Boston on Saturday. Johan Franzen’s(notes) 20th goal got Detroit to within 2-1 at 17:28 of the second. Chris Kunitz(notes) needed only 30 seconds to restore Pittsburgh’s two-goal Turbo CHI lead, deflecting Niklas Kronwall’s(notes) up-ice pass to Evgeni Malkin(notes) before scoring off a rebound of Pascal Dupuis’(notes) backhander. Matt Cooke(notes) scored into an empty net with 1:19 remaining.

Quade tries to mold Cubs into winner

CHICAGO (AP)—Mike Quade had gone ED hardy clothes fishing, a passion for him that ranks right up there with baseball. On his way to the boat earlier this month, a call came from general manager Jim Hendry. Seems the Cubs were on the verge of hooking a big one. The Cubs were nearing a deal for a pitcher who could be at the top of their rotation, a right-hander with an emotional approach and a dominating fastball who had won 15 games while pitching in the formidable AL East last season— Tampa Bay’s Matt Garza(notes). Quade turned off his phone, hit the water for four hours and when he got to his offseason home in Florida heard talk radio bemoaning that the Rays had lost Garza. “So you get done with a fishing trip and yes! We got him,” Quade said Friday at the Cubs winter convention. Quade earned his job as manager of the Cubs after replacing Lou Piniella on an interim basis last season, leading a team that was far out of playoff contention to a 24-13 record. He garnered the approval of veteran players, showed that after managing more than 2,000 games in the minors and coaching uggs 2010 third base for the Cubs that he was ready for the next step. Now with Garza coming on board along with former Tampa teammate Carlos Pena and fan favorite Kerry Wood(notes) returning, the Cubs are expecting to better their fifth-place finish in the NL Central last season. “Why not us? And that’s the way we’re going to look at it,” said Quade, who’s been known to take public transportation to Wrigley Field. “It’s not going to be easy. We’re going to approach this thing like we’re going to win a division.” The Cubs won division titles in 2007 and 2008 in Piniella’s first two seasons, only to be swept in the first round of the playoffs both years. They failed to make the postseason in 2009 and then fell apart a year ago before Piniella retired Aug. 22. For those counting, it’s 102 years and counting without a World Series title. Quade was chosen from a field that included one of the most popular players in Cubs’ history, Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. “He’s easy to talk to. You can walk into his office at any time. He’s prepared. He knows how to manage, he’s been around some greats. It’s time to take over,” Cubs center fielder Marlon Byrd(notes) said of Quade. Quade’s team will be an interesting mix. There Puma Sandals Women Shoes are three young players who displayed their potential last season—the three Cs—in shortstop Starlin Castro(notes), outfielder Tyler Colvin(notes) and pitcher Andrew Cashner(notes). There are veterans like Aramis Ramirez(notes), Byrd, Geovany Soto(notes), Alfonso Soriano(notes), Wood and Pena. And now there’s a big-time pitcher in Garza to join a rotation that includes Carlos Zambrano(notes)—a pitcher known for his emotional outbursts—and Ryan Dempster(notes) with a strong cast of potential fourth and fifth starters. Zambrano was suspended and underwent counseling last season after a fiery outburst across town against the White Sox when he went ballistic in the dugout, apparently upset that some of his teammates didn’t dive for balls. When he returned, Zambrano went 8-0 over his final 11 starts. Now with Garza and Zambrano in the same rotation, the Cubs have two pitches not afraid to show what display what they feel. Zambrano’s antics have some times been off the chart. “We have another emotional guy on the team, which is Garza. I’ve been watching him for some period of time,” Zambrano said Friday. “The same emotion and same passion for the game, nobody will take that away from me.” Garza and Zambrano chatted during Friday’s convention. Garza said he wants Zambrano to teach him his sinker. Zambrano said he would, as long as Garza shows him his curveball. They both would like to be part of a Cubs team known for Air Yeeyz Shoes its winning, not any theatrics. Garza’s already been part of a turnaround with the Rays, who went to the World Series in 2008 and won their division a year ago. “I came from a team where they didn’t win forever,” Garza said. “I’ll just do my part and be a piece of the puzzle … That’s all I can do. Be me and do my part.”

Golden-voiced Ohio homeless man headed to rehab

LOS ANGELES (AP)—An Ohio homeless man whose Cheap Nike Shox silky voice made him a web phenomenon is headed to rehab for alcohol and drug dependency after an appearance on “Dr. Phil,” show representatives said Wednesday. Ted Williams agreed to enter a private facility after a lengthy one-on-one interview with Dr. Phil McGraw set to air Thursday, show spokeswoman Stacey Luchs said in a written statement. Family members said the dispute was over Williams resuming drinking. “If Ted is ever going to get better, he’s got to be honest with himself and admit he’s addicted to drugs and alcohol,” McGraw said in a statement. “I’ve told him it’s uggs 2010 not going to be easy and it’s going to take a lot of hard work. It might be a long journey for him, but this is a big step in the right direction.” The appearance will be Williams’ third on the show this week. Meanwhile back in his home state, Williams has been subpoenaed in the case of a woman who was accused of drug abuse, authorities said. The Madison Press in London, Ohio, said Williams was a passenger in the woman’s car in May and is wanted at a Feb. 11 hearing over whether deputies’ search of the car was legal. Ottawa (16-20-6) at Boston (22-12-7)

One game after a disheartening meltdown uggs 2010 resulted in a costly defeat, the Boston Bruins bounced back with a late four-goal flurry to regain sole possession of first place. They’ll hope to carry the momentum into a four-game homestand as they try to hand the sputtering Ottawa Senators a sixth consecutive loss Tuesday night. The Bruins (22-12-7) led Montreal 2-0 with 2:30 left in regulation Saturday, but the Canadiens rallied for a 3-2 overtime win, temporarily tying Boston at the top of the Northeast Division. On the short end of the same 2-0 deficit with 3:30 remaining Monday in Pittsburgh, the Bruins responded. They pulled even with two goals in a 13-second span, then went ahead on Mark Recchi’s(notes) tally in the final minute before adding an empty-netter in the 4-2 win. “In hockey, those things happen and usually over the course of the year you win some and lose some that way,” goalie Tuukka Rask(notes) said. “Back-to-back situations like this, it doesn’t usually happen. But we made it happen.” Two of Boston’s late goals - including the game-winner - came on the power play, which had gone 0 for 13 in the previous five games, four of them losses. Still, three of those defeats came after regulation, and the Bruins have earned at least a point in eight of their last nine - a 5-1-3 stretch. The Senators (16-20-6) only wish they could say the same, having totaled seven goals during a season-worst five-game losing streak. Their punchless offense suffered another MBT shoes blow when veteran forward Alex Kovalev(notes) felt discomfort in his knee following Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay. Kovalev is expected to miss at least a week. In the meantime, Ottawa will try to revive an offense that is already without Jason Spezza(notes) and ranks 29th in the NHL with 2.21 goals per game. “When you’re losing it’s definitely an uphill battle to get back on the winning end,” center Zack Smith(notes) said. “We’re confident we will and once we do I think we’ll be able to capitalize on the chances.” Offensive improvement may be difficult to come by against Boston, which has allowed an NHL-low 88 goals (2.15 per game). Likely starter Tim Thomas(notes) is 12-3-1 with a 1.52 goals-against average in his last 16 starts against Ottawa. Ottawa’s Brian Elliott(notes), though, was the best player on the ice the last time the teams met, stopping 31 shots in a 2-0 win at the TD Garden on Nov. 13. Daniel Alfredsson(notes) has five goals while the Bruins have scored only two during the Senators’ three-game winning streak in Boston, with Elliott in net for all of those victories. The Bruins hope Marc Savard(notes) can help Nike Dunk SB Low Shoes spark a better offensive effort. Savard has 17 points in his last 12 games against the Senators, but he’s been held to six in 18 games this season since returning from post-concussion symptoms. It’s unclear if Nathan Horton(notes) will be available for Boston after missing the last two games due to an undisclosed injury. Milan Lucic(notes), a frequent linemate of Horton’s, leads the Bruins with 16 goals but has none in his last 11 games.
